What's in My Bag & Review: Gucci Soho Disco
Earlier this year when I went all crazy-eyed for bags, I purchased the Gucci Soho Disco. Part of my final decision to buy the bag was because The Purse Forum thread for this particular bag was talking about new colors that were being released. Within that discussion it was revealed that with the new colors also came an update to the bag - no tassel on the zipper. No one seemed to know for sure if this was a complete redesign of the bag and all bags produced in the future would have no tassel, so some of us (including me of course lol) became a little frantic trying to purchase it before the 'old' models were all gone. I love the tassel and think it lends a lot of character to an otherwise very simple bag.
As it turned out, a complete redesign wasn't the case and you can still buy the basic colors with the tassel - seems like only the multicolored ones have no tassel. However, the price has since gone up $210 for a current retail price of $1190, so I'm really glad I purchased when I did. Plus, I had a new email 15% discount code for Neiman Marcus and 8% ebates on top of that. I was pretty darn chuffed with that score!
I've been using this bag since June, and finally feel like I can give a thorough review (well, except for long-term durability).
***All items purchased by me. This is not a sponsored post.***
Overall, I really love this bag. For the most part, it's no-fuss, and I can use it year round and in all types of weather. I also love that it kind of jazzes up even a simple outfit!
First off, I'm really glad this has the classic Gucci G's instead of the new double G's that look like the Cover Girl logo. Seriously, since I read that Covergirl reference awhile ago I can't get it out of my head whenever I see the updated GG's anywhere.
And that tassel!!!!! It's solid, sturdy and makes a statement without being too crazy.
There is also no edge or piping wear since June.
Next, let's talk measurements. This is 6"H x 8"W x 3"D. Several sites (including Neiman Marcus) list larger measurements and many others have the height & width reversed, but I took a measuring tape to this bag and these are the results. I sometimes wish this bag was slightly wider (by maybe an inch?) because I think it would make things a little easier to get in and out such as my phone - I have an iPhone 7Plus currently. The depth is good though...I don't feel like I bump into anything or anyone. Plus it’s not rigid, so even if I did I might not notice. The Soho Disco also has a good height - I can fit my sunglasses on top (no case) of the contents with ease.
Oh, I also have this on the second shortest hole. I'm just under 5'6" and the top of the bag hits just about at my hip. I like it slightly longer because I usually wear it cross body style. If you're really short it might be a little long for you, but if you are tall it's all good!!
Here is the interior. I do wish it was a slightly darker color to hide marks and whatnot. Luckily, I haven't had any so far (knock on wood!), but I am careful to keep everything in pouches or in the side slip pockets.
Now, what fits inside?!!!
This is what I carry most of the time. I could carry more - as with the subsequent pictures in this post - but carrying too much really distorts the shape and zipper of the bag. Sometimes I'll swap out the Cottonelle for regular Wet Ones wipes (the Cottonelle are in a smaller package), but I always have some sort of wipe with me!
I could fit a larger wallet, but that really compromises on interior space.
If I go super minimal on beauty bits and put those items into the side slip pockets instead of the LV mini pochette (except for the gloss), I can fit my little pouch that houses an extra battery, cords & a pen. I don't do this very often though because I don't like put lip products free roaming in this bag in case lids get loose. If I think I'll need to charge during the day, I'll just keep the pouch in the car, carry an extra little tote or switch bags.
If I go super duper minimal and also replace my little wallet and coin purse with a flat pouch, I can fit both wipes and my earphones.
Here is the Gucci Soho Disco packed with all the contents from the last picture. As mentioned before, I can definitely fit more items inside, but the shape gets distorted AND it's like opposite Tetris trying to get stuff out of the bag.
Finally, some cons. Besides what I said about sometimes wishing this was about an inch wider and and that it had a darker interior, I can only thing of 2 other slight annoyances:
No keeper for the end of the strap: this means that the end gets curved up. It'll flatten back out if you put some weight on it or hold it with your hand for awhile. I've seen some videos where they'll add a little elastic to hold the end in place - I don't like this option though because I feel that would make a big indent over time. So I just deal with it. At this point I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me. Plus, this is more just an everyday bag. If it was an evening or other occasion type bag I might feel otherwise.
You might notice in some of the pictures that there are some indents/slouching on the left side of the bag. This is because I tend to rest my hand on that side - yeah, I'm one of those people who don't know what to do with their hands when they stand around lol!! Because of the softer leather that means I've managed to misshapen the bag. BUT, I'm always careful to stuff it when not in use, so that really helps not get creases or more permanent slouching. Now that I've written that out, I think I'll try to not rest my hand there so much???!!!!
Here is the Gucci Soho Disco on the shoulder.
Another shoulder shot.
Here is the bag cross body.
Another cross body shot, but with the bag more toward the back instead of the side. With the bag not being rigid, this position is very comfortable and actually how it probably ends up a lot of times I wear it.
More mod shots. See how my hand naturally gravitates toward that spot...
If you've had your eye on this bag, I'd highly recommend at least trying it on in the store. It's functional, versatile and is just a fun bag!! Remember to sign up for email so you can get a discount from whatever retailer you choose, and also remember your ebates!
