Review: Fresh Umbrian Clay Face Treatment

Fresh Umbrian Clay Face Treatment, $48 for 3.4oz @ SephoraFresh.comNeiman Marcus. It's also available in a 1oz size as part of Fresh Umbrian Clay sampler set for $32. It also contains the Umbrian Clay Oil-Free Lotion and Soy Face Cleanser. I chose to purchase the sampler set so I could give my friend the other 2 items...she loves the Soy Face Cleanser and is looking for a lightweight moisturizer for Summer.

Fresh claims this is a multi-use product: cleanser, mask and spot treatment. This was a big selling point for me!! I mean...c'mon...who doesn't want a multi-tasker?!! Especially with travel, it helps to carry as little as possible.

Another reason I wanted to try this was because I was looking for a cleanser that would cut through the oil on my chin and nose, without being horribly drying. Up to this point no cleanser was up to the job and I'd have to follow up with a scrub most nights. If I don't cleanse the oil off then it builds up and clogs my pores very quickly.

The Umbrian Clay Face Treatment is rather drippy and can slide off if you have too much product on your fingers...I tried to show in the second picture how thin it can be. Shake it up or squish the tube around before each use, as it can separate if left sitting too long. It definitely smells like clay, but I didn't find the scent terribly strong. The texture is faintly grainy, but you can only feel it if you try to use it as a cleanser.

Note: pre-cleanse to remove your makeup first!! As a cleanser this did cut through the oil and was mildly exfoliating. It left my face feeling really soft and refreshed, and I could use it both morning and night without drying my skin. The exfoliation was actually enough, and I was excited because I was able to stop using my ARCONA Cranberry Gommage! Oh, if it were only that easy...but it wasn't!

I had to use way more product than any other cleanser I've tried - to the point where I felt like I was wasting and could see this becoming very expensive if a $48 tube didn't last that long. Honestly, at the rate it was getting used up I couldn't see the 3.4 oz tube lasting more than a month. It helped a bit if I put it on my face dry, but then it was a lot harder to remove.

Speaking of removing...this is best used and removed in the shower with a baby washcloth. I don't know what is in this stuff that makes it stick, but it tends to get everywhere and stay there!! Up your nose...hairline...eesh! Even then I could still see quite a bit of the residue when I would follow up with toner. So as a cleanser I had good results, but it was too much work.

As a mask and spot treatment I thought this was mediocre. It did soak up oil, but it didn't help much with blemishes nearly as much as my beloved DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask. It seemed as if it had more of a soothing effect rather than a healing or zit-zapping effect.

Overall this is a thumbs down for me. Too much work for not enough payoff, especially if this is supposed to be a 3-in-1 product, and especially not for the price and amount of product per use.
