Mini Review: Chantecaille Detox Clay Mask and Chantecaille Retinol Hand Cream

Chantecaille Detox Clay Mask with Rosemary and Honey, $78/1.7oz @ Nordstrom, SpaceNK, Chantecaille.com, Bloomingdales, Barneys, Neiman Marcus.

I was really excited to try this because:

a. It's Chantecaille

b. It's Chantecaille

c. It had really good reviews!!

This will be a very quick mini review, even for a mini review!! After using this 3 times, I can't stand how my face feels afterwards. On my skin this mask leaves a slightly heavy, oily film that I have to cleanse to remove!!! Wholly defeats the purpose of having a good mask, I think!! I tried once to leave the film on, and it made the application of the rest of my skincare routine not as smooth. My skin felt kind of yuck the rest of the day and I was not happy. I'm sure it was all in my head, but I do think part of our skin looking good/bad is how we feel about it!!

Needless to say I didn't get past the filmy junk to see any benefits. I'm utterly disappointed since this mask was so pricey. Ugh. Here's what I can say about the mask...

This feels a bit heavy on my skin. It also doesn't dry, which is actually a very good thing for those with already dry skin or for those who hate that itchy feeling with traditional clay masks!! And a little bit goes a long way!! For easier removal, I'd suggest using warm water with a soft cloth...but be sure it's a cloth you don't use for anything other than your face as this did stain my cloths.

The packaging on this mask is beautiful, and I love that it comes in a heavy glass jar!! And it's great to have that foil lining. If you leave it semi attached that will help preserve the integrity of the mask for much, much longer.

I'm really sorry...wish I had more to say about what this mask actually did and any benefits. If it's at all possible to get a sample of this before buying I would say definitely try to do that first!! Here's what the description from Neiman Marcus says (sounds like magic - wish it worked for me!!!):

Chantecaille Introduces the Detox Clay Mask—a new way to purify and firm skin.

  • Detoxifies and purifies problem skin while it soothes and softens.
  • Hydrates and remineralizes skin.
  • Tightens pores and minimizes any signs of oiliness.
  • Firms and improves skin tone, regulating PH balance and even helping to heal scars—all while avoiding the drying, crackling effect of other clay-based masks.
  • A gentle, non-allergic formula tolerated by even the most sensitive skin.

To its signature anti-inflammatory base of healing and regenerative flower extracts—Rose, Mimosa, Jasmine, and Narcissus—Chantecaille adds a wonderfully absorbent kaolin (clay), soothing and nourishing extract of pure honey, and rosemary, credited with purifying and sebum-regulating properties.

Essential Oils from Sweet Orange peel and German Chamomile soothe, soften and regenerate tired, stressed skin. Peppermint Oil and Burdock Root are anti-bacterial agents that help purify skin and maintain healthy pores.

How to use:

This dark grey, naturally fragrant mask is designed for regular or occasional use, depending upon skin's condition. Applied in a generous layer over a freshly washed face and neck, it works for 10 to 12 minutes, and can then be gently rinsed off.

There is no drying or flaking as the mask imparts its revitalizing, hydrating magic.

Chantecaille Retinol Hand Cream with Rose and Vitamin C, $75/2.55oz @

Nordstrom, SpaceNK, Chantecaille.com, Bloomingdales, Barneys, Neiman Marcus.

The packaging is quite luxurious for a hand cream. Just looking at the tube I wasn't expecting much, but then when I picked it up it felt heavy - the cap has weight to it and helps it stand upright. And I love the pretty pale pinky box!!

I've now used an entire tube of this (it'll be in my March Empties), and can say I'm not impressed. It's a nice cream - though calling it a cream is all wrong because you expect a cream to be rich and thick and have a heavier feel. This is lightweight and has more of a texture between a lotion and a cream.

This sinks in very quickly and leaves no greasy residue. It made my hands look nice and moisturized, but after an entire tube I saw no physical difference to my hands from when I use CeraVe or L'Occitane. I also didn't feel this was moisturizing enough. Upon application it felt good, but a few minutes afterward I would feel it lacking and would add another cream on top. Total miss for me, especially at this price point.

***Edited to add: This cream has some nice ingredients and I do think it would work well to keep hands looking their best. However, I think this is a product you need to use more than one tube of (and keep using) to see and maintain those results. I forgot to point out that I also may not have been as impressed because I do use a nightly serum (whatever I'm trying to use up that didn't work on my face) under my regular hand cream...so in order to see results on my hands a product has to be pretty fantastic. ***
